Robin Sweere, the Sourcing and Consulting Manager at Quest Recycling Services LLC, was a key panelist at the Digester Finance Summit sponsored by WWF, AgSTAR, on September 20 in Washington, DC.

New development models of Anaerobic Digesters are now emerging that significantly reduce the risk to farmers and project developers while generating significant financial and environmental benefits. New business models will also open up sources of investment capital previously inaccessible to digester system developers. Such models have been used successfully to scale up the wind and solar industries, but have yet to be widely implemented for dairy digester projects.

“Quest is excited to be on the forefront of enabling these projects,” said Sweere. Quest’s feedstock feasibility analysis program provides anaerobic developer with all necessary information, including local food waste generators volume, to help assess the profitability of developing an anaerobic digester.

In order to tap these opportunities, digester projects must be able to demonstrate profitability while addressing a variety of risks to the satisfaction of host farms, project developers, lenders, and investors. Achieving a paradigm shift in digester development calls for innovative strategies to reduce costs and improve reliability, increase revenues, and share the benefits among key stakeholders.

”Quest was the sole representative of food waste generators and haulers to provide prospective on generators needs when working with digesters. The overall challenge with these projects is the sheer number of contracts required, the risk potential, and bringing together of all of the stakeholders at the right time. This is why Quest’s Feasibility Study is a key element to a sound due diligence and saves the digester developer so much time,” said Sweere.

“The conference was one of those opportunities where you had all the stakeholders together to educate on risks and mitigating factors to help enable contracts to come together in a more efficient manner,” said Sweere.
